Peggy, very relevant topic! I recently learned that “35% employers decided not to offer a job to a candidate based on the content uncovered on a social networking site”. So it’s definitely important to be careful whatever you do. With the various sites available to separate professional life from personal life we could do well to use them to our advantage.
I think it’s pretty common to use FB as personal and LinkedIn as a professional site.

Great article! I like to make the point that on social media, you are still dealing with human beings. The things I see people write on others’ Facebook walls astounds me sometimes.

Ask yourself, would you walk up to this person in a public place with all their friends around them and say it right to their face? If you did, how do you expect they’d react? Use that as your guide.

“They should have expected it, it’s Facebook after all” isn’t an excuse. That would be like… say your cat is giving unmistakable signs she is in a rough-housing mood, yet you insist on rubbing her belly and trying to wrestle with her. Saying they should have “expected” it is like blaming your cat when she scratches you after you PERSISTED after she let you know in a clear way you’d best leave her alone….
