A brand is a recognizable name, logo or symbol that sets you apart from your competition. Building your brand is about making connections with potential customers and in so doing inducing them to take notice of, and remember you so that they’ll be more likely to purchase products or services from you rather than your competitor. Today there is no more cost-effective way to build your brand than through the power of social media since after-all, social media is about making connections.
The difficult part of social media is not gathering followers, heck, a 6 year old can click a follow button over and over again and is sure to get some people to follow back. The trick is to make a lasting impression on your targeted connections, and the way to do that is by distinguishing your output from that of your competitors and thus building your brand. So just how do you go about building your brand through social media? The following are a few simple suggestions to help you stand out from the crowd:
1. Create a mission statement. What is it that you are trying to accomplish with social media and how are you going to go about achieving it? This step is simply about finding your voice. What do you have to say to your connections that will make them take notice of you? What social networks will you use to realize your goals?
2. Create memorable profiles pages for all your social networks. If your page looks like every other profile page, how will your target market remember you? Use the same professional photo of you on all of your social media profiles so that your connections will remember you from one social networking site to the next. Use your businesses colors and logos across all sites. List links to your website(s) and to your other social media profiles.
3. Be consistent. Your connections will not remember you if you only pop in to your social networks one or twice a week. Set a social networking schedule and stick to it.
4. Bring value to your posts, tweets and status updates. Make your followers remember you by helping them learn new things, or by brightening their day in some way. Let them know that you are an expert in your field, not by saying “If you want to buy product A, I’m your guy”, but by demonstrating your expertise through the material you provide.
5. Network! Social media is about making connections. It’s not a one way conversation. Listen to what others have to say and respond to them. Connecting with your followers by addressing them directly is a great way to build relationships and keep you in your audience’s memory.
Now that you know the basics of building your brand through social media go out there and don’t only get noticed, get remembered.
